Kate's platform was AIDS education and advocacy. Kate spent her year of service as Miss America 1998 doing work in support of service and inspiration. She traveled the country addressing groups and meeting with public officials on behalf of the AIDS cause.
Kate has a wide range of experience in AIDS work. She has been a volunteer for Chicago's Test Positive Aware Network, the NAMES Project, the Center for AIDS Services, and several hospices. She has met with Sandy Thurman, Clinton Administration AIDS Czar; Senators Dick Durbin and Carol Moseley-Braun; and former Senator Harris Wofford, CEO of the Corporation for National Service. She has collaborated with leaders of the Centers for Disease Control, AmeriCorps, the National Minority AIDS Council, the National AIDS Fund, the American Federation of Teachers, and the National Education Association AIDS Project.
Kate received her Bachelor's degree in Theatre from Northwestern University in June 1999 and has since been pursuing her dream of acting. For two weeks in the summer of 2001, Kate joined the Broadway company of Cabaret directly from a successful run as Sally Bowles in the National Touring production of Cabaret. Previously, Kate had appeared on Broadway in Jekyll & Hyde where she understudied the role of Lucy. Favorite credits include: Into the Woods, City of Angels, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Anything Goes and Children of Eden. Currently, Kate is starring as Louise in Gypsy for the Portland (OR) Center Stage�s 2001-2002 season.
