Nicole Johnson

Once Nicole was crowned Miss America 1999, she spent her year of service educating the public about the "hidden killer" of diabetes. Nicole, who has Type I diabetes, has been traveling on behalf of her cause for over 5 years. In that time, she has lobbied the U.S. Congress numerous times, assisted in passing diabetes insurance legislation throughout the country, promoted school- related diabetes legislation and has helped raise over $14 million for diabetes research.

A former model with Elite and now an internationally known motivational speaker, Nicole has a Master's Degree in Journalism from Regent University and a Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of South Florida. Beyond public speaking, Nicole has appeared in numerous public service announcements and televised specials including The Christian Broadcasting Network, TBN, ABC Television, The Tonight Show, Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, Donny and Marie and The View. She has also written articles for a variety of journals, newspapers and magazines.

Today, Nicole continues to expand her horizons by working in the publishing industry. Nicole currently has three books in bookstores, Mr. Food's Quick and Easy Diabetic Cooking�.with Nicole Johnson, Living With Diabetes (autobiography) and Every Day's a Holiday�with Nicole Johnson. Nicole has also created a new diabetes website and educational campaign called "Take the Lead" - www.diabeteslead.org. This program aims to empower people affected by diabetes and encourages them to exhibit and express leadership in their lives.

Some of Nicole's fondest memories of her Miss America experiences are: Being named a Certified Diabetes Educator by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, speaking on behalf of President George W. Bush at the 1999 Republican National Convention, meeting the makers/inventors of the insulin pump, speaking from the steps of the U.S. Capitol on behalf of diabetes, and of course traveling to 12 countries (5 continents) as an international speaker and ambassador for diabetes care.

Currently, Nicole lives in the Washington, DC area and works as a lobbyist and consultant for diabetes issues.
